Antique Petite Brass Cannonball Andirons c. 1900 | Small Federal Fireplace Fire Dogs | Colonial Revival Brass Hearth Decor

$499.00

A beautiful and unusually petite pair of antique brass cannonball andirons, featuring an elegant early American-inspired form with substantial spherical finials, turned standards, graceful arched legs and wonderfully detailed leaf-form feet.

Dating to approximately the late 19th to early 20th century, likely circa 1890–1920, these small-scale fire dogs reflect the Federal and Colonial Revival fireplace designs popular during the period.

What makes this pair particularly charming is their petite size. Measuring only approximately 9.25 inches high × 7 inches long, they are considerably smaller than the large-scale antique andirons typically found today. Smaller fire dogs were suited to more intimate hearths and are especially useful today for small fireplaces, bedroom hearths, cottage fireplaces or decorative non-working fireplaces.

Each andiron is topped by a highly polished cannonball finial over a beautifully turned baluster-form standard. The open, curving front legs terminate in decorative cast leaf-form feet, while long rear supports provide the classic three-footed fire-dog construction.

The warm brass and sculptural silhouette make these especially well suited to English Country, Federal, Colonial Revival, Grandmillennial, traditional and collected interiors. They would be beautiful displayed against brick or stone, in a painted fireplace surround, or simply used as architectural hearth decor.

Styling
Their unusually small scale makes this pair particularly versatile. Style them in a small brick or stone fireplace with stacked logs, against a painted hearth in an English Country room, or inside a non-working fireplace as sculptural brass accents.
The combination of petite proportions, oversized cannonball finials and decorative feet gives this pair considerably more character than many later mass-produced brass andirons.
