A narrow top drawer features a contrasting foliate and geometric inlay motif, while the lower portion is divided into two beautifully framed small compartments accented by round hardware and an elaborate carved central ornament. Delicate beaded detailing further defines the architecture of the upper case.

Below, a projecting walnut surface separates the upper section from two generously sized drawers, creating the distinctive chest-on-chest silhouette.

The lower case features beautifully figured walnut drawer fronts, understated round hardware, a shaped apron, and wonderfully decorative turned front feet.

The combination of warm walnut, contrasting inlay, carved ornament and unusual proportions makes this much more than a utilitarian antique chest. It has the sculptural quality of a piece intended to be noticed.

At 40 inches wide, the chest provides substantial storage while remaining relatively compact. Its 49-inch height also makes it an excellent statement piece for spaces where a traditional long dresser would be too large.

Beautiful in a bedroom, entryway, dressing room, dining room or living space, this piece works particularly well in English country, traditional, grandmillennial, Victorian, collected and layered interiors.

We especially love antique furniture like this for its ability to bring warmth and history into a contemporary room. Paired with a gilt mirror, blue-and-white porcelain, original artwork or a pleated-shade lamp, it becomes an extraordinary focal point.

DETAILS

• Antique walnut chest on chest / tall chest
• Late 19th century, estimated
• Circa 1880s, estimated
• Warm walnut finish
• Figured wood drawer fronts
• Decorative contrasting inlay
• Foliate and geometric ornamentation
• Raised upper storage section
• Carved central decorative element
• Beaded / molded trim
• Two large lower drawers
• Smaller upper storage compartments
• Shaped lower apron
• Decorative turned front feet
• Antique-style hardware

DIMENSIONS

40" W × 19.75" D × 49" H

Its relatively narrow 40-inch footprint makes this a wonderful alternative to a traditional long dresser.

CONDITION

Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and previous use.

The wood displays the beautiful variations in color, finish, grain and patina expected from a piece of this age.
