The sitter is depicted in a classic hand-in-waistcoat pose — a timeless gesture of composure and refinement — dressed in a tailored black coat and tartan waistcoat. It's possible the sitter, likely a wealthy businessman, was of Scottish descent/origin.

This portrait came from an estate in New Bern, North Carolina and includes a letter of provenance from Arthur Stewart of London, who was a painter and art dealer, from the early 1900s. It would have been purchased from Arthur Stewart in London and brought over to North Carolina. The Stewart name is also very prominent in Scottish history and points to possible Scottish links. Portrait may be from as early as 1830s/1840s by John Seymour Lucas' uncle, John Lucas.

Rich, moody tones and a dramatic red drapery backdrop give the piece depth and presence, while the original frame in black with gilt detailing grounds it beautifully in a traditional setting.
